Why Sublimation Doesn’t Work on Cotton
The primary reason traditional sublimation printing doesn’t work on cotton is the nature of the fabric and the sublimation process. Here’s a breakdown of the challenges:
1. Fiber Composition
- Cotton: Made of natural cellulose fibers, which do not absorb dye-sublimation ink effectively. The ink does not bond with cotton fibers, resulting in poor adhesion and fading over time.
- Polyester: Contains synthetic polyester fibers that readily accept dye-sublimation ink, allowing the ink to bond permanently.
2. Sublimation Process Requirements
- Sublimation relies on high heat (350°F to 400°F or 175°C to 205°C) to turn dye-sublimation ink into a gas, which then bonds with the substrate. Cotton, being a natural fiber, does not respond to this process.
3. Ink Adhesion
- Traditional sublimation ink does not adhere well to cotton, leading to unsatisfactory results such as dull colors, poor durability, and easy fading.
